Soccer, also known as football in most countries outside North America, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players each. The objective of the game is to score goals by getting a ball into the opposing team’s net, which is typically a rectangular area guarded by a goalkeeper. The game is played on a rectangular field known as a pitch, usually grass or artificial turf, with a goal at each end.
Players primarily use their feet to control and pass the ball, although they can use any part of their body except their arms and hands; only the goalkeeper is allowed to handle the ball within the penalty area. Matches are typically played in two halves of 45 minutes each, with a 15-minute halftime interval. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins.
Soccer is governed by various rules known as the Laws of the Game, established by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). It is one of the most popular sports globally, with millions of players and fans, and numerous professional leagues and international competitions, such as the FIFA World Cup, which is held every four years.
